The five-section sermon outline (~14 minutes)
A standard Friday khutbah runs 12–15 minutes. This outline is structured for that timing, with each section labelled by approximate minute. Adapt freely.
Section 1 · The Qurʾānic foundation (3 min)
Open with the four-stage Qurʾānic prohibition. The Qurʾān legislated riba gradually — a model the congregation can relate to in their own staged exit.
“Those who consume interest cannot stand [on the Day of Resurrection] except as one stands who is being beaten by Satan into insanity. That is because they say, "Trade is [just] like interest." But Allāh has permitted trade and has forbidden interest. So whoever has received an admonition from his Lord and desists may have what is past, and his affair rests with Allāh. But whoever returns [to dealing in interest or usury] - those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide eternally therein.”
“And if you do not, then be informed of a war [against you] from Allāh and His Messenger. But if you repent, you may have your principal - [thus] you do no wrong, nor are you wronged.”
The verse declares war from God and the Prophet ﷺ on the consumer of riba — language the Qurʾān uses for no other sin except shirk. This is the foundation.
Section 2 · The Prophetic weight (2 min)
Narrated by Abu Hurayra
“Avoid the seven destructive sins ... and consuming riba (among them).”
The Prophet ﷺ placed riba alongside shirk and murder. Three minutes here is sufficient: the weight is the message.
Section 3 · The contemporary reality (3 min)
Here you bring the verses into the congregation's lived experience. The statistics below are AU-specific; use the equivalent figures for your country if you are speaking outside Australia.

~46%
AU Muslim households in conventional mortgages
AUD ~450k
Average riba a 25-yr AUD 500k mortgage at 6% generates over its life
Section 4 · The mercy + the door of tawbah (3 min)
After establishing the weight, open the door. The next verse in al-Baqarah, immediately after the war declaration:
“And if someone is in hardship, then [let there be] postponement until [a time of] ease. But if you give [from your right as] charity, then it is better for you, if you only knew.”
Allah's command is honest about reality. Exit is required; the path to exit accounts for hardship. The brother or sister in the congregation today should leave knowing: the door of tawbah is open, and exit is possible.
A Muslim who realises they are in a conventional mortgage and resolves to exit it as soon as practicable — while making sincere tawbah and stopping further engagement — is, by the agreement of contemporary scholars, considered a sincere repentant. The duration of the exit is judged by what is possible without ruining one's family, not by what is theoretically immediate.
Section 5 · A practical takeaway + closing duʿāʾ (3 min)
End the khutbah with a single concrete next step the congregation can take. Suggestions, in increasing order of demand:
- Easiest: "Switch your super to Crescent Wealth this week. It takes one afternoon's paperwork. It removes years of default-fund riba exposure with zero out-of-pocket cost."
- Medium: "If you have any consumer debt — credit cards, BNPL, personal loans — make a written plan to extinguish it within 24 months."
- Hardest: "If you are in a conventional mortgage, make tawbah today. Then sit with your spouse this month and make a written staged-exit plan over the next 12–18 months. Resources exist — the brothers and sisters at ribafreejourney.com have compiled them."
Close with the duʿāʾ from āl-ʿImrān 3:147 — a believer's prayer recorded in the Qurʾān itself:
"Our Lord, forgive us our sins and our transgressions in our affairs, and plant our feet firmly."

After the khutbah · resources for the congregation
A khutbah without follow-up resources is preaching without discipleship. Direct your congregation to these specific pages — they are sermon-shaped, not encyclopedia-shaped:
- For someone in a mortgage: /exit#tawbah — the religious framing. Then /exit — the 5-strategy diagnostic quiz + calculator.
- For a new graduate: /playbook/zero — the foundation tier. The single biggest move is the super switch to Crescent Wealth.
- For a family planning marriage: /marriage — the mahr framework + nikāḥ budget calculator.
- For a family with capital and aging parents: /obligations/mawarith + /tools/mawarith · the inheritance calculator. Then /death-planning.
- For someone considering hijrah: /hijrah + the readiness assessment at /tools/hijrah-readiness.
